The PROLED touchscreen MacBook Pro models have a design problem

The new MacBook Pros come with OLED and touchscreen displays, but they also have a glaring Apple-related design problem.

Apple now makes touchscreen MacBooks and is calling them the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR displays (talk about a mouthful). However, these new MacBook Pros have a design problem that goes against Apple’s ethos, and I’m not talking about the fact that Steve Jobs said that touchscreens don’t belong on laptops.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models do nothing new

In the latest edition of his newsletter Power On, Apple insider Mark Gurman raised a very interesting point. The PROLED MacBook Pros don’t actually do anything new or interesting.

These MacBook Pro models exist solely because other manufacturers have had touchscreen laptops for a very long time. At best, it can be argued that the company wanted its customer base to feel less friction between their MacBooks and their other touch-enabled products like the iPad or the iPhone Duo.

Gurman points out that Apple usually enters a product category late because it wants to put its own spin on it and do it the Apple way. The iPhone Duo, for example, uses a new form factor, which Samsung and Huawei got to first after details for the foldable iPhone leaked.

In 2024, Apple entered the XR (Extended Reality) market with the Apple Vision Pro. The headset also approached this product category with a ton of unique ideas, though the price tag made sure that it wouldn’t sell well.

However, the PROLED MacBook Pros have nothing new going on for them. They’re just like every other OLED touchscreen laptop, there’s no Apple spin here. Except, perhaps, for the return of the glowing Apple logo on the back.

Not the best year for Apple in some ways

In some ways, this has been an excellent year for Apple as sales for the MacBook Neo, the iPhone Duo, and the iPhone 18 Pro models are doing great. On the other hand, however, the iPhone Duo has had some problems which have led to negative PR as well as ad campaigns from Samsung poking fun at the Duo.

Apple is moving on from Steve Jobs and his beliefs, and that might sometimes mean that a new product from the company just doesn’t carry that magic that its user base might have been expecting.
